El alcalde de Cochrane, Jorge Calderón Núñez, se mostró satisfecho tras la realización de este evento en la comuna. “Estamos profundamente contentos y agradecidos de todos quienes han hecho lo posible para desarrollar con éxito la segunda versión del Ascenso al Cordón Esmeralda, en sus modalidades de esquí randonee, también de raquetas de nieve y el ascenso libre, permitiendo que la comunidad local y visitantes de la región y también de otras partes de Chile puedan disfrutar de un escenario maravilloso, de montaña y de nieve, con altos estándares de seguridad como los que hemos desarrollado durante el día de hoy (sábado)”, reveló.

En esa misma línea, el edil entregó unas palabras a todos quienes aportaron a la realización del evento. “Agradecemos a las distintas instituciones que nos han colaborado, al sector privado y por supuesto la respuesta de la comunidad. Creo que este tipo de actividades dan cuenta que tenemos una vocación hacia el turismo, que nos permite realizar actividades al aire libre, de naturaleza, de montaña, de competencia, pero también recreativas, que son perfectamente posibles de realizar todo el año”, añadió.

Finalmente, el jefe comunal aseveró que este tipo de actividades permiten que la comuna se consolide como la capital invernal de la Región de Aysén. “Seguiremos insistiendo en esto, en posicionar a Cochrane como la capital invernal, del trekking de nuestra Patagonia”, concluyó.

Tras descender al punto de partida, los participantes disfrutaron de la premiación de cada categoría con galardones otorgados por el comercio local de Cochrane, destacando a Camping y Restaurante Lago Brown, Ruta 7, Tienda Kalfu y Dragón de la Patagonia, quienes no dudaron en entregar un aliciente extra a los aventureros que se atrevieron a completar este desafío, quienes al compás de una buena comida en el fundo de Atilio Romero, celebraron la pasión por la montaña y se organizaron para futuras expediciones en otros lugares de nuestra recóndita Patagonia.-

The Municipalidad de Cochrane, in collaboration with the Mountain Club, Carabineros, Army and the Cochrane Hospital, are in charge of carrying out the «Ascenso al Cordón Esmeralda». The event, which takes place in July or August of each year, dreams of having the participation of a hundred registrants, who give all their energy to reach the goal.

The adventure starts early from the Lago del Diablo sector, near the estate of Don Atilio Romeo, who does not hesitate to provide his land to receive the competitors. As the ascent is made, imposing landscapes such as Valle Grande, Lake Cochrane, Esmeralda and Chacabuco provide the best postcards for this mountain experience that had four categories available: snowshoeing competitions for women and men, randonee skiing and recreational.

In the 2023 edition, the triumph in the women’s snowshoe section corresponded to Ingrid Espinoza, who spoke about this experience carried out by the Municipalidad de Cochrane and her new victory, since she won last year’s version. «The truth is that I didn’t think I would win because there were a lot of women registered to compete and the recreational activity,» adding that «luckily it went well for me and I managed to get a good result,» she said.  

In the men’s category, the triumph went to Yonathan Vargas Espinoza, highlighting the experience lived in this competition full of adrenaline in the mountains. «It’s the first time I’ve done it and I thought it’s a pretty demanding activity, but at the same time quite beautiful,» he said. In addition, the winner stressed that this type of activity serves to strengthen bonds of camaraderie between the participants who carry out this type of adventure sport.

I think that these types of activities show that we have a vocation towards tourism, which allows us to carry out outdoor activities, nature, mountains, competition, but also recreational, which are perfectly possible to do all year round,» he added.

Finally, the community chief asserted that this type of activities allow the commune to consolidate itself as the winter capital of the Aysén Region. «We will continue to insist on this, on positioning Cochrane as the winter capital of trekking in our Patagonia,» he concluded.

After descending to the starting point, the participants enjoyed the awards of each category with awards granted by the local Cochrane business, highlighting Camping and Restaurant Lago Brown, Ruta 7, Tienda Kalfu and Dragon de la Patagonia, who did not hesitate to give an extra incentive to the adventurers who dared to complete this challenge.  who, to the rhythm of a good meal at the Atilio Romero farm, celebrated the passion for the mountains and organized themselves for future expeditions in other places of our remote Patagonia.
